Owners Ian and Kathy Smith have been using local ingredients in their cooking since 1997 when they opened the award winning Caledonian Curry Company, supplying local independent outlets with gluten and additive free fusion foods. In 2006 a derelict grocery shop in the village was restored to create a 24 seat restaurant, bar, kitchens and takeaway and the Crannag Bistro established itself as the place to eat in the area.

The Crannag has since won the Highlands and Islands Restaurant of the Year award in 2010 and the Young Ambassador Food Award in 2011.
